Opening Credits...

All of your soon-to-be-favorite Irish movies in one spot!  These are all pretty good Irish movies... let me know if I need to add some.

I used the website "RottenTomatoes.com"  It's great: they list a bunch of reviews for each movie (each reviewer giving it a rating of "rotten" or "fresh") ... each movie gets a rating from 0-100%... 60%+ approval from the critics is "Fresh"... below 60 is "Rotten"... This site has some excerpts from reviews on that site... Click here for some GREAT Irish Family Movies

Romantic Comedies

Waking Ned Devine (1998) is a comedy about a town that loses its wealthiest resident.  The President’s “Worthy Choice” Award goes to this MUST see.  78% Fresh

The Matchmaker (R, 1997) is a romantic comedy starring Janeane Garofalo as a political spin-doctor who goes to Ireland hoping to find a way to win the Irish-American vote for her boss, a US Senator from Massachusetts.  She arrives in a small Irish village at the height of a Matchmaking Festival… 54% rating (rotten), though I thought it was OK (what do the critics know, anyway?!).

Classics...

The Quiet Man (1952) was director John Ford's epic romantic comedy - a loving, sentimental, nostalgic tribute to his Irish ancestry and homeland. Starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, and Barry Fitzgerald. Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Director.  91% Fresh on rottentomatoes.com  Gotta love John Wayne in Ireland!

Rudy (PG, 1993)... OK, it's not REALLY Irish, it's Notre Dame-IRISH!  A young man who looks very much like Bob McKiernan/a hobbit (Sean Astin) realizes his dream of playing football for the Fighting Irish... A great movie.  83% Fresh

Irish Jam (PG-13, 2004) is a very funny movie about a hustler from LA (Eddie Griffen) who wins a pub in a small island village in Ireland

Political Movies

In the Name of the Father (R, 1993)  One of Ireland’s most popular films, In the Name of the Father is based on Gerry Conlon’s autobiography “Proved Innocent.”  Conlon, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, was wrongfully imprisoned in 1974 for the bombing of a London pub.  Also starring Emma Thompson.  91% Fresh.

Michael Collins (R, 1996)  Follows this IRA leader from the Easter uprising in 1916 to his death.  Starring Liam Neeson (in the title role), Aidan Quinn, and Julia Roberts with a bad Irish accent.  76% Fresh.  Good film.

Some Mother's Son (R, 1996) is a film about the hunger strike in the Maze prison when a group of Irish Nationalists died for trying to change their status and treatment from that of common crimminals to political prisonsers. It is the choice a mother makes to force feed her son instead of letting him starve to death. It is a well-made and heart-wrenching movie. 69% Fresh.
